Summer is peak season in Romania and a great time to visit, especially if you want to explore the Carpathians or relax on the Black Sea beaches.
Should I visit Romania during the summer?
From June to August, travellers can enjoy a variety of outdoor activities thanks to the long sunny days. The warm and dry weather is ideal for exploring Romania’s natural wonders and historical sites.
June starts with pleasantly warm temperatures, while July and August can get hot, especially in the southern regions.
Bucharest, overall a crowded city, is emptier during August because of the high temperatures. If you want to visit Bucharest or other southern places, I wouldn’t recommend August.
On the other hand, this is the perfect time to visit the Black Sea coast and the Danube Delta in south-east Romania.
The Carpathian Mountains offer chilly retreats for hiking enthusiasts seeking a respite from the heat.
Romania experiences a surge in tourism during the summer, especially around popular destinations like the Black Sea coast and Transylvania.

What to pack for a summer trip to Romania?
Pack light, breathable clothing suitable for hot days. Essentials include a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Don’t forget your swimsuit and a beach towel if you plan on spending time by the sea.
Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring historical sites, hiking trails, and towns and cities. Sandals are perfect for beach days.
Evenings can be cooler, so a light jacket or sweater is recommended. Although summer is generally dry, an umbrella or light raincoat might come in handy for occasional showers.
What to do in Romania during the summer season?
During summer in Romania, expect festivals and events, but also higher accommodation costs and more crowded attractions. Here are the best things to do during summer.
See two of the most beautiful roads in the world
Transfagarasan and Transalpina are two high-altitude roads in Romania, both offering spectacular views. If you must choose one, Transfagarasan is more beautiful, but not by much. To visit them, you must have a good driving experience, or you can pick a group trip.
Transfagarasan reaches an altitude of 2042 meters (6,699 ft), while Transalpina is the highest road in the country, climbing to 2145 meters (7037 ft). Because of this, the highways can be circulated only during the warm season. Usually, they are open from June to October, but this is not the rule. Sometimes, the roads can be closed during the summer because of the snow. They are both closed at night.

Visit the Black Sea Cost
The Romanian coastline can’t offer too much. The beach season is rather short – from June to September, with July and August the best months for warm water. Many times, the quality of services is unsatisfactory.
Still, if you want to visit the seaside, choose Mamaia, Costinesti, or Vama Veche if you wish to party. To enjoy the silence in a discreet place, you can camp in Corbu, Vadu or Tuzla. The following places are the most popular family trip destinations: Constanta, Mangalia, Venus, Saturn, Jupiter, Eforie Nord and Eforie Sud.

Enjoy the parties!
Romanians party! The best times to party during summer are Bucharest – Old Town and the seaside: Vama Veche, Costinești, Mamaia. During summer, you can find a lot of music festivals to choose from. I will name the most important, all with international line-ups.
Two popular electronic music festivals during summer are Untold in Cluj and Saga in Bucharest. Beach Please in Costinești and Neversea in Constanța are for hip-hop / urban music lovers. SummerWell in Buftea, near Bucharest and Electric Castle in Cluj both focus on alternative music.
Artmania in Sibiu, Rockstadt in Rasnov and Metalhead Meeting in Bucharest are the most popular festivals for metal music fans. If you are a jazz fan, you can attend either Garana Jazz Festival or Jazz in the Park in Cluj. If blues is more fitting for your soul, then the Open Air Blues Festival in Brezoi is for you.
